Gamla Stan, the Old Town, is one of the largest and best preserved medieval city centers in Europe, and one of the foremost attractions in Stockholm. It´s also where Stockholm was founded in 1252.
All of Gamla Stan (along with the adjacent island of Riddarholmen) is like a living pedestrian-friendly museum full of sights, attractions, restaurants, cafés, bars and shops.
Preserved medieval cellar vaults and frescoes can be found on almost every block, behind the visible facades. On snowy winter days, the entire island feels quite reminiscent of a scene from a story book.
Welcome to Gamla Stan!
